About the Translations

Elektra, Lohengrin, Tannhäuser, Tristan and Isolde, Parsifal, Fidelio, HänseL and Gretel; Selected Songs and Song cycles

Comp

These are the first singable, poetic English translations for many of the songs selected and nearly all of the operas. Designed for the audience's pleasure and the singers' needs, these translations aim to be faithful to the original German in content and poetic form.  Each translation follows the same rhyme scheme and meter as its original, and plays the same word games whenever possible   Great care was taken in the translations, as it would be on stage, not to "run over"or miss any jokes.  (Yes, there are jokes in German operas.)
